How do I renew my New Jersey nursing license?
In the state of New Jersey, the license renewal occurs every two years. Therefore, if you want to use your nursing license, you should renew it when it is due to expire.
To apply for license renewal, you must meet the state continuing education requirements. Thus, you should complete 30 hours of continuing education.
Note that one credit hour of continuing education must refer to the prescription of opioid drugs, including alternatives for managing and treating pain, as well as the risks and signs of opioid abuse, addiction, and diversion.
You can easily renew your license through the New Jersey online portal run by the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs. You should enter the user ID and password and log into your account for renewal.

How do I get my New Jersey nursing license by endorsement?
You may apply for the New Jersey nursing license by endorsement, if you already hold your nursing license in another state. You should also present the proof of passing the NCLEX.
It is important to know that you do not need to obtain a New Jersey license if you already hold a Compact license from your primary state of residence.
Submit the following documents for a nursing license by endorsement
- Payment of $200 fee for application and licensing
- 2” x 2” passport type photograph

Is New Jersey a Compact Nursing State?
Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) allows RNs or LPNs to have one multistate nursing license to work and practice as a nurse in other compact states without having to obtain a new nursing license.
There are now more than 30 NLC member states. According to the agreement, you may be able to work as a travel nurse without applying for a new license.
In July 2019, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy signed a bill, which approved the state’s participation in the Nurse Licensure Compact. Hereby, the state of New Jersey became the 34th state to join the agreement and became a compact state for nursing.
As of now, there are some planned implementations to undergo concerning the compact in the state.
To clarify, nurses who hold active, unencumbered, multi-state nursing licenses in NLC member states, may practice in the state of New Jersey under their multi-state license.
